What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Drug Plan is a prescription drug benefit program that provides coverage for many medications. The program was added to Medicare in 2003 and is offered by private health insurance companies that contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Part D plans help pay for generic and brand-name drugs and provide other benefits, such as protecting you from high out-of-pocket costs. How does Medicare drug coverage work?

Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs. It is an optional benefit available to all Medicare beneficiaries. Even if you don’t take prescription drugs, consider Medicare drug coverage. You’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you don’t enroll when you’re first eligible, and if you don’t have creditable prescription drug coverage (from your employer or union). Generally, you will pay this penalty as long as you have Medicare drug coverageMedicare drug coverage is only available through Medicare-approved plansPlans vary in terms of costs, and covered drugs. Compare Medicare Plans in your area by calling Senior Help & You LLC at 1-877-835-9806.

How to get Medicare Part D?

There are two ways to obtain Medicare drug coverage (Part D):
  • Medicare prescription drug plansMedicare Advantage Private Fee-for-Service plans, some Medicare Cost Plans, and some Medicare Advantage Medical Savings Account plans include Medicare drug coverage (Part D). A separate Medicare drug plan requires Part A and/or Part B.
  • Medicare Advantage plans or other Medicare health plans with drug coverage. These plans cover Part A, Part B, and Medicare drug coverage (Part D). Remember, you must have both Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, and not all Medicare Advantage Plans offer drug coverage.
To join either of these plans, you must reside in the plan’s service area and be lawfully present in the country.
